The iPhone XS is the handset for those of us who rely a little more on the highest of high-quality photos and videos from our phones. While the X or the XR will do fantastic jobs when it comes to cameras, battery lives and processing powers, the XS takes a few things just a step or two further to give a little more back.
While the operating system on the XS can now be upgraded, the handset is where iOS 12 first saw the light of day. Its improvements paved the way for features that help with organisation as well as how much time everyone spends on their phones. Grouped notifications and screen time, for instance, might well have redefined our relationships with our beloved iPhones by optimising the time we spend on them.
The Super Retina OLED display on the XS is a marvel of the smartphone world. It gives you deeper blacks and richer rainbows of colours than you've probably ever seen on a phone. A resolution of 458ppi (1125 x 2436 pixels) is actually the same as the iPhone X that came before, but Apple has fine tuned an already near-perfect machine in the XS display.
Apple's A12 Bionic chipset is another step closer to console-level graphics in a phone – and it's a sight to behold (especially if you fancy a dalliance with the world of augmented reality (AR)). It's obviously more than enough to cater to your everyday browsing, emailing and texting needs, but it's in the realms of gaming and editing where the A12 comes into its own.
The glass in the XS is, according to Apple, the strongest ever seen on a smartphone, whilst the steel band around it is also more durable than ever before. Add to that an IP68 rating for resistance to water and dust and you've got a handset that's tough enough to handle anything.
The dual 12MP camera on the iPhone XS refurb makes the most of the very best of its predecessor, the iPhone X (which, by anyone's standards, has an amazing camera itself), but the increased size of the pixels means that they can take in more light in the newer model. Their depth has been increased as well, which allows for better auto-focus for the snap-happy amongst us.
Another way in which the XS built on the success of the iPhone X is in the battery department. When it was released, Apple promised it could outlast the X by a full 30 minutes and it stands up to the test in our refurbished iPhone XS handsets, too. More often than not, you'll make it until the evening with some juice left in the battery. If you're worried about heavy use and losing juice during the day, wireless charging comes built in as standard so you can make use of Apple's charging pads to get you through the busiest of times (these are sold separately).
